African Fusion - June 2010

June 2010

Despite SA's exit, the Fifa World cup continues to be the international event of the year and a highly successful one for our country. It puts us in the International spotlight, and as Jim Guild says in his comment this month: "What a compliment it is that our country was chosen to be the first African country ever to hold this iconic event."

DSE Structural Engineers and Contractors is our featured company this month. The results of its efforts to make our world-class football stadiums are very prominent at this time. The company fabricated the cantilever roof trusses and assembled the chords for the rear circular spine for Soccer City, was responsible for the compression ring and its 120 supporting columns for Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium and the radial and cantilever roof trusses for Greenpoint Stadium.

Remember to enter your talented welders into the Young Welder of the Year competition and to look out for our September issue - and enjoy the rest of the football. It's unlikely to be here again in any of our lifetimes.

This issue's first technical paper focuses on the ways of achieving quality weldments that will perform as designed for the entire expected life of a structure and how objective and subjective assessment during the weld creation process is needed to achieve this, rather than simply relying on post-weld NDE. The second paper outlines the development of a nonintrusive method for weld quality estimation based on acoustic sensing of the GMAW short-arc process.

SA's first TimeTwin application

We visit GRW Engineering, who has become the first manufacturer in the country to install a Fronius TimeTwin automatic welding system and we feature: typical applications of both combustion and electric spraying processes; the use of a flexible jigging system for robotic welding from Demmeler; and, without permission from Fifa, aluminum specialist Dr Tony Paterson tells us about the fabrication of a 2,5 m rotating football recently unveiled at Brightwater Commons in Randburg.
