African Fusion - March 2010

March 2010

Welcome to the first edition of African Fusion for 2010, the year of the cup, so naturally this issue has a strong construction flavour.
The company profile features Tass Engineering, now one of an elite set of local structural steelwork manufacturers to be certified to ISO 3834 part 3. Tasioulas expects infrastructural developments to continue, both in South Africa and Africa as a whole, long after the Fifa World cup is over. "Africa's heyday will be upon us in the next 10 years. The World, led by China, is going to cluster around Africa in the next decade and we intend to be well placed to participate," he says. Also on the construction front, we look at jack and skid gantry cranes, manufactured by LCV Engineering for Medupi and Kusile.

We look forward to June, and I don't only mean the World Cup!

Medupi and Kusile - material choices and welding

We find out about the material choices and consequent welding requirements for the Medupi and Kusile Power Stations from Morris Maroga of Eskom Generation Business Engineering. Many of these materials are new in the world, like the VM12, the T24 :7CrMoVTiB10-10, and the fine grained TP 347 GH. "Only two other power stations in the world, both still under construction, will be using these materials, but all super critical boilers (SCBs) and the next generation ultra-super criticals (USCs) are likely to be made of these or their derivatives," says Maroga.

2009 Singapore IIW International Assembly and Conference

Our two papers are both taken from this Conference entitled ‘Advances in Welding and Allied Technologies'. We publish the Portevin lecture on the development of gas-shielded arc processes in automatic welding and a paper describing investigations into high strength nickel base material alloy 617 and its potential use in ultra super critical (USC) power plants.

Orbital welding solutions

Polysoude recently visited South Africa to present and demonstrate its orbital welding solutions to industry. African Fusion reports.

Spraying with electricity

This article on thermal spraying deals with electric arc spraying techniques.
