September 2010
Our September issue of African Fusion celebrates, with the SAIW, successes of the South African welding Industry at the SAIW's 62nd Annual Dinner and Awards ceremony. Congratulations to the winners: Mark Sloan, who won the Phil Santilhano Memorial Award; Morris Maroga, the Harvey Shacklock Gold Medal Award; and Andy Koursaris, who received this year's SAIW Gold Medal Award.
Congratulations also to our new President, Madeleine du Toit, who brings with her some refreshing perspectives and a positive future outlook: "It's a wonderful time to be in the country when projects like the Eskom's new build programme, are taking off," she tells African Fusion.
Steve Lennon of Eskom agrees: "The energy sector in South Africa is in a very exciting space. Forget the other challenges in the South African economy - we can build the economy just on the back of the energy sector," he says as guest speaker at the Annual Dinner.
Our company profile features Zimmermann & Jansen, the severe service valve company and the latest ISO 3834 certified welding fabricator, and in our cover feature, Chris Eibl of ESAB suggests how fabricators can use productivity to beat the recession.
Our first technical paper looks at materials and structural integrity for the next nuclear generation - potentially topical in the light of the current debate about South Africa's new nuclear fleet. Also published, is a paper highlighting the hybrid laser-GMAW welding process, which demonstrates the potential for improved productivity of the root pass for on-site girth welds for pipelines.
The African Fusion features in the September edition have a hardfacing flavour. We present Alex Pavlenko's paper about Deloro Stellite and the PTA welding process, delivered at an SAIW evening event earlier in the year; we visit WASA's Roodepoort factory and talk to Wiehan Zylstra about hardfacing solutions for tubular cored wires.; and we visit Speciality Metals to find out about the use of tungsten carbide grit for extending the life of ground engaging equipment subjected to abrasive wear.
And there is more.
Look out for our final African Fusion of the year, which will be published in November so that it gets to you before the Christmas break.
