African Fusion - June 2012

June 2012

African Fusion's June issue takes its theme from the World Conference on NDT that South Africa hosted for the first time. We therefore present several welding related NDT articles:

At the SAIW graduation ceremony at Emperor's Palace held on 23 March 2012 in which 90 people were awarded certificates for having successfully completed SAIW and IIW courses at the Institute. We present TZ Joubert's motivating talk present at that dinner.

  • We highlight the SAIW's successful participation in the conference, the exhibition and the Education village at the WCNDT.
  • Harold Jansen, who has been promoted to the position of NDT manager at the Institute, was awarded the Reissner award for the paper he presented at the conference. His paper, Eddy current testing: Profiled eddy current probes for complex shape inspection, is published in this issue. In it, Jansen discusses the use of profiled eddy current probes to inspect complex shapes such as turbine blade steeples, generator rotor blades and gear teeth.
  • We also met Marco Gonzalez of Gammatec NDT Supplies at the WCNDT conference. In this issue, we talk to Gonzalez, who was an early adopter and campaigner in Africa for digital radiography.

Our company profile features Necsa's Nuclear Manufacturing Centre, which is now the only nuclear-certified manufacturing facility in Africa. The company was awarded ASME III certification in June 2011 and has recently added ISO 3834 (Part 2) certification to its quality credentials.

We also visits Robor Pipe Systems and talk to Kobus Marais, the division's managing director, about the company's pioneering efforts towards globally competitive quality and productivity level and we report on the multiple distribution channels being opened up by the Harris group in SA

To cap off the magazine, we feature a new inspection tool, Wiki-Scan, that is to be made available in South Africa by Yaskawa Southern Africa, the newly named Robotics SA, aka SA's Motoman distributor.

Enjoy
