This month we do a photo montage of two exhibitions: The CONEXPO-AGG in Las Vegas and locally, Automechanika 2011, held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.

The huge Conexpo event was extremely well attended, attracting nearly 120 000 registered attendees and despite continued uncertainty in the US construction markets, industry professionals flocked to the Las Vegas Convention Centre where an atmosphere of hopeful optimism prevailed. There was so much to see and unfortunately, much of it won't be on our shores any time soon, but made for a fascinating visit nevertheless.

Automechnika 2011 saw streams of visitors pouring into the biennial international trade fair for the automotive aftermarket. With former president and current deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe giving the keynote address at a round table executive breakfast arranged by the Motor Industry Staff Association, the tone was set for professionalism and diversity.

For our Industry Insight article, CEN had a chance to speak with Dirk van Dyke, CEO of the National Tool Initiative Programme (NTIP) in an effort to ascertain what role it is playing in resolving the dire skill shortage that besets South Africa. There is some innovative thinking behind the programme.
