With major companies developing some of the more remote areas, Africa's mining potential is being hailed as the source of some of the most impressive resources and even the risk factors involved in developing this harsh continent is taking a backseat to the potential profits to be made. In our Mining section we cover some of the players who took part in the Mining Indaba held in Cape Town last month.
This was budget month and high on the agenda was the contentious e-Toll. While offering a short reprieve for Gauteng road users, the Minister's announcement, during his budget speech, of suspension of the toll system, may be indicative of the citizens of South Africa taking a stand against the hefty tolls that they are being expected to pay, without consultation and without consideration for their already dwindling pay packet. And talking of tolls and freight, in our On-Road Trucks section, premium Swedish truck manufacturer, Scania, which has been steadily growing its share of the extra-heavy segment (over 16 500kg GVM) of the SA market, has now for the first time entered the heavy sector (8 501-16 500kg GVM) with the launch of its ‘smallest big truck'.

By incorporating the soft magnetic composite material Somaloy® from Höganäs, Microgen Engine Corporation designed a free-piston Stirling engine for use in its microCHP (Combined Heat and Power) appliance, which provides small buildings with energy-efficient and environment-friendly heat and power generation.
