Capital Equipment News - November 2011

November 2011

The intention this month was that when you flipped to the centre of the mag, you would find a pullout of the commercial vehicles on show at JIMS, to stick it up on your wall above your desk. However owing to a production glitch, we mis-paginated it. If perchance you are so smitten with the idea of having this as a pullout, we will send you the high res pdf to print out yourself. (Those darn gremlins!)

The Captain of Industry column has taken off, with this desk being inundated with submissions. My advice here is, make it interesting and unusual and you will stand a greater chance of having your submission selected and your 15 minutes of fame, recorded in print, for posterity. This month we chat to Managing Director, David William John Sibley (but Dave t to his friends) from Ludowici Meshcape (Pty) Ltd to hear what makes him ‘tick'.

On the Happenings page read how a South African company is pioneering the latest laser scanning technology with plans to mount high speed scanners on a variety of mobile platforms including a gyrocopter, 4x4s and even a golf cart. Supplied by 3D Laser Mapping, the Riegl VZ-400 will be used by Land and Marine Surveys, a survey company based in Umhlanga in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, for traditional terrestrial scanning, mobile data capture and the production of design-quality graphics.

So, be informed and enjoy the read!

Company Profile

For the last thirty years, Leon van Vuuren Bulk Carriers has been in the transport business, starting with a single truck, driven by Mr Leon van Vuuren Senior back in 1974. Since then, things have changed dramatically - for the better - as not only has the ‘fleet' grown, but so their freight offering. Read how, with Donaldson Filters, they have become the Pilot Programme for Donaldson's Bulk Fuel and Lube Programme.

Behind the Purchase

Pilot Crushtec is making inroads into Africa, and a recent, major purchase by Sedgman SA, had the screen and crushing company install an entire plant on behalf of Sedgman's client, Rio Tinto Coal Mozambique. The modular plant was used to provide data for coal processing to enable maximisation of coking coal extraction from the coal mined.

Freight and logistics

Warehousing plays a vital role in all logistical processes. This month we have a feature on some of the advancements within this sector such as Sage Geode v6.1, which brings enhanced warehouse optimisation to distribution and logistics operations worldwide, with their Warehouse Management System. Then there are companies winning awards for their innovative equipment design, case in point being, leading warehouse equipment manufacturer, Doosan, represented in South Africa by Goscor Lift Truck Company that has been awarded the prestigious Red Dot Design Award for its futuristic Concept Forklift (CFL).

Next month:

As we fly towards the end of the year, we pack in as much info as we can, including a fascinating article on driverless trucks in our Technology section and a look at what equipment is being used in road making, in the Construction section.
