Chemical Technology - January 2009

January 2009

The cover shows an ammonium sulphate processing plant designed and built by VWS Envig - a similar plant is currently being constructed by the company in Madagascar for the Ambatovy Project. The turnkey project sees VWS Envig designing, constructing and commissioning the plant, with most of the equipment being pre-manufactured in South Africa.

The processing plant will be constructed on the country's east coast, adjacent to the Port of Toamasina, and will recover ammonium sulphate from process by-product.

The plant is robust, and has been designed to withstand cyclone conditions due to its location, and will be using crystallization and evaporation to ensure the recovery of high grade, saleable fertilizer. The crystallization process itself occurs over three stages and is energy-efficient, contributing to the overall efficiency and economy of the plant. Once operational, the plant will yield 25,6 tons per hour of final product grade crystals.
