May 2010
Please don't forget to read your May issue of ‘Chemical' from cover to cover before the games begin! Our June issue will be with you before the end of June too, so pencil in some time for reading it between the matches!
The May edition covers a wide range of subjects. The Water treatment feature is based on a paper presented in February 2010 at the Engineers Without Borders -UK National Research Conference 2010, ‘From Small Steps to Giant Leaps...putting research into practice' hosted by The Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK.
The Corrosion and coatings engineering feature contains three short articles, for a change, all of which should be of interest. ‘Powder coating and anodizing - Advantages and disadvantages' by Andrew Rush, an expert in this field, who has lots of useful information to pass on to us all. The second short article, by Raj Krishnaswamy, is entitled ‘Metallurgical engineering thermal spray coatings career and jobs'.
"Pneumatic conveying of powdery goods - Application in an industrial bakery" by Stephan Brand, of Aerzener, in Germany, constitutes our Solids handling main article, and in the last feature, Chemical plant design and construction, we look at plant revamps. Jose Guimaraes, a process engineering consultant, discusses plant modifications that are normally done to increase capacity or, less frequently, to improve plant performance.
Our annual Awards have been judged and the prize-giving, which promises to be a glittering event at the Glendower Golf Club in Edenvale, will be held on the 14th July.

Efficacy of combining colloidal TiO2 or colloidal Ag coatings with the ceramic water purifier for use in rural and peri-urban Sierra Leone
by Miriam L Hansen, Institute for Materials and Processes, University of Edinburgh, UK, and Ana Viera and Blanca Antizar-Ladislao, both of the Institute for Infrastructure and Environment, University of Edinburgh, UK
Engineers Without Borders UK is an international development organization that facilitates human development through engineering.
This interesting article aims to assess the potential of combining the photo catalytic properties of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a low cost, low energy and low environmental impact water treatment method with the Point of Use ceramic water purifier (CWP) developed by Potters for Peace (PfP) in order to provide a WHO standard drinking water solution suitable for use in rural and peri-urban Sierra Leone.
Pneumatic conveying of powdery goods – Application in an industrial bakery
by Stephan Brand, Aerzener Maschinenfabrik GmbH, Germany
If a bakery has to deal with a quantity of approximately 20 tons of flour every day, this task can only be accomplished at a fully automated large-scale business, where the flour is conveyed only by automatic means. The focus of the developer is on the pneumatic and mechanical conveying and aspiration units for the safe and efficient disposal of dust at production units.
Plant revamps – some observations
by Jose Guimaraes, PhD ChE, Process Engineering Consultant, New Jersey, USA
The author specifically highlights the complicating factors of revamps when compared to a new plant design, some of which are: plot plan limitations due to the fact that the existing equipment is in place, and relocation, especially of large equipment, can be costly and time-consuming; and design that has to rely on existing plant drawings, which may not be up-to-date.
