The bridge, which connects villages on the east of the river with the rest of the country, straddles the Mohembo East (Kauxwi) Ferry landing site with the Mohembo West (Shakawe) Ferry landing site.
Leonardo rises high
While concrete is the natural choice of primary construction material for high-rise buildings, meeting the demands of Africa’s highest building has called for some innovative concrete engineering.
“The key challenges on the project was the vertical concrete pumping height of more than 225 metres. To overcome this challenge, as well as to avoid any blockages in the pipeline which was over 200 metres long, a super-plasticised concrete mix with a slump of 180 mm was used.”
This is according to Francois Pienaar, Aveng Grinaker-LTA Contracts Director responsible for the multi-billion-rand Leonardo mixed-use tower being constructed in Sandton for 75 on Maude, which is a partnership between Legacy and Nedbank.
The structure will rise 55 floors above its four-level basement when completed during 2019 and construction materials leader AfriSam was among the specialist subcontractors chosen to supply this landmark project.
Paragon Architects South Africa (PASA) was tasked by developer Eris Property Group to design an aesthetically-appealing corporate head office and showroom that fits in with the industrial environment of Isando in Johannesburg for Barloworld Equipment, the Southern African dealer for Caterpillar earthmoving equipment for the construction and mining industries.
Barloworld Equipment currently operates out of various sites and offices across Sub-Saharan Africa. It was decided that the corporate head office in Sandton, Johannesburg be relocated to the Isando site. Here the building had to provide sufficient space to consolidate all corporate staff, while promoting employee well-being.
The building also had to facilitate a productive but agile working environment, taking into account efficiency with regard to water use, energy consumption, and waste management. Another important criterion was that the look and feel had to reflect Barloworld Equipment’s corporate identity and culture, PASA Project Architectural Technologist David Cloete highlights.
