This month's cover features a project executed by DURA Soletanche Bachy. As a company it has just entered a new era. Locally it represents Soletanche Bachy and last year, the specialist companies in the Vinci Group of which it is part of, amalgamated into a holding company, Soletanche Freysinnet. February's Construction World features an article on hot dip galvanizing which can prevent so-called concrete cancer - rusting reinforcing steel (rebar). In addition, this issue focuses on Ulula Ash, a relatively new player in the fly ash market, the impressive dam refurbishment of the Wemmershoek Dam, while it a new tip wall at Klipspruit Colliery is increasing this open pit coal mine's capacity.

Mammoth continuous pour In November last year, Stabilid cast a 1 m thick transfer slab for a new City Lodge in Pretoria being developed by City Property. What made this pour unique is that some 1 200 m3 of concrete needed to be poured in a single day. Tip wall at Klipspruit A US$450-million capital investment expansion project started in January 2008 on the open pit coal mine known as Klipspruit Colliery. The goal was to increase the run of mine (ROM) capacity of 4,8 million Mtpa to 8 million Mtpa. Dam refurbishment The R1,4-million refurbishment of Wemmershoek Dam in the Western Cape using BASF Construction Chemicals’ products is a prime example of dam refurbishment. Dawning of a new era In South Africa Soletanche Bachy is represented by DURA Soletanche Bachy. In 2009, the specialist companies in the Vinci group amalgamated into a holding company, Soletanche Freyssinet. The amalgamated companies comprise of Soletanche Bachy, Freyssinet, Menard, Terra Armee and Nuvia.
