Construction World - July 2010

July 2010

July's issue of Construction World focuses on water engineering. Our cover story details how a Cape Town based contractor, CSV Construction is involved with the construction of a R250-million 20 Ml wastewater facility and associated works at Fisantekraal, north of Durbanville.

ITT Water & Wastewater is supplying the pumps to keep the Gautrain's tunnels and stations dry while Intaka Tech's water purification plants are increasingly being used to supply potable water to remote communities.

With the World Cup a thing of the past, Construction World focuses on how expert project management was used to ensure the timeous completion of Cape Town stadium. Work on this stadium started running seriously behind due to labour issues and this necessitated the contractor to solicit help.

Although a project outside South Africa, the re-glazing of the Westin Peachtree Plaza hotel is inspiring. This mammoth project entails that all 6 350 windows of this 73-storey Atlanta hotel be replaced after a tornado severely damaged the facade. The painstaking process will be completed at the end of the year.

The glass panels had been custom designed and manufactured more than 35 years earlier, so no off-the-shelf stock was available for replacement purposes, while current codes called for thicker glass to withstand wind forces.

Replacing only the damaged glass would create an uneven, checkerboard effect on the building’s exterior. “It was like trying to put a new denim patch on an old pair of blue jeans,” says Ed Walls, general manager of the iconic hotel.

Innovative solutions

The construction of a 128 m long, four-lane bridge over a busy highway may seem like a straight-forward civil engineering undertaking but in reality it was quite a challenging project with its own set of risks.

Still seeing a rainbow

Errol Burman, the MD of Rainbow Construction, is still optimistic despite various shortcomings in the construction landscape. Construction World has a one-on-one interview with him.

Cape to Angola

Stefanutti Stocks Marine is involved in several marine projects, two of the major ones being at the Ben Schoeman Quay at the Table Bay Harbour and at the Malongo Base in Cabinda, Angola.

Energy audit to lower carbon footprint

Barloworld Power is teaming up with their technology partner, Energy Cybernetics and has chosen Barloworld Equipment's Isando facility in Johannesburg as the proving ground for an innovative energy conservation programme.
