Construction World - February 2012

February 2012

Construction World's February issue focuses on a wide selection of projects that have recently been completed or are ongoing.

The new R840-million 36 950 m2 Alexander Forbes head office, being constructed at 115 West Street, Sandton, is one of the first new developments in line for a 4-star Green Star rating granted by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) and is set to become a green icon for the Sandton CBD.

Staying with the environmental aspect: the United Arab Emirates is currently ranked fourth in the world for per capita carbon footprint. This can be attributed to the fact that the UAE has the world's seventh largest oil reserve, and, as a result of the abundance of oil and its low consumer pricing, private vehicles are the preferred form of transport for the nation. Moves are afoot to solve Abu Dhabi, the capital's, carbon challenges.

Also in Abu Dhabi: The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, the first St. Regis to open in the Middle East and located on Saadiyat Beach, will soon welcome guests. Offering the St. Regis century-old bespoke hospitality and uncompromising service, the resort is Abu Dhabi's new leisure address.

In what is a boon for shoppers and the community, the first official shopping mall for the Pietermaritzburg township of Edendale has been completed by contractor Aveng Grinaker-LTA.

The Kusile Power Plant will be to the benefit of the entire South African population. It is currently being constructed in Mphumalanga. Esorfranki Civils is pressing ahead on a complex subterranean service infrastructure contract at Kusile Power Station.

Above the ground and below it, the construction programme continues at an intense pace as Eskom presses ahead on its new 4 800 MW coal-fired Kusile Power Station development, with the project steadily taking shape as a series of concrete structures reaches skywards alongside a forest of cranage.

On the mining construction side: Concor Civils has begun work on a R24-million subcontract awarded by Murray & Roberts Cementation to provide temporary civil works for the sinking and development for a shaft system required on Sasol Mining's greenfields Impumelelo Mine Project in Mpumalanga.
