Electricity + Control

May 2003

Reliable and efficient flow control is made simple through the use of EGE flow sensors and controllers. Available from Countapulse Controls, these units are designed to work in water-based media or air.
Operation of the flow controllers is based on the thermodynamic principle, with the tip of the probe internally heated to a set number of degrees higher than the temperature of the medium into which it projects. As the medium flows past, the heat generated internally in the sensor is conducted away. By comparing the temperature of the sensor element, to that of the medium, the velocity of the flow can be derived.
Functioning of the flow controllers is influenced by the thermal conductivity, heat capacity and viscosity of the medium. The EGE range includes a broad range of elements of various specification to cater for numerous different applications. Typical detection ranges are from between 1 and 150 cm/s in water and between 0,5 to 30 m/s in air.
