Cables and Accessories

LappKabel poses the question, ‘When is flexible not flexible’ - discussing seven categories of continuous flex cables. In a second article in this section Aberdare Cables reviews Interdac III cables which are designed for low power, long distance applications, at low cost but for non-critical loads.

Control Systems and Automation

Rockwell Automation and Festo discuss cutting energy costs for compressed air – emphasising that measuring and tracing compressed air system performance is the first step towards improving efficiency.

Energy Efficiency

With energy efficiency on everyone’s agenda, it is appropriate that Endress+Hauser address the continuous cycle of energy monitoring and targeting – making the point that energy saving is not difficult – but making the savings sustainable is where the challenge lies. BMG’s world class production efficiency initiative is worth the read – showing how reduced energy consumption and increased productivity – as well as operating cost savings - can be achieved.

Sensors, Switches and Transducers

WIKA gives a ‘bird’s eyeview’ on the role of the sensor in temperature measurement in an article entitled ‘Eagle eyes in process automation’ – pointing out that temperature transmitters are complex yet robust, focusing their senses on small voltage fluctuations – making them the ‘eagle eyes’ in process technology.

Transformers and Substations

Martec Cable Services reviews the practical application of periodic testing, condition assessment and condition monitoring methods to support predictive maintenance strategies for distribution networks.

Are You EnviroFicient?

Of great concern today is the fact that the majority of boilers currently in operation in South Africa were not designed for the ever-decreasing quality of coal available to users and operators. This leads to a drop in efficiency levels and an increase in maintenance problems. Aaccording to OEN Enterprises the solution calls for appropriate measurement and monitoring technology as well as additional training to ensure that operators can better understand, and therefore manage, the emerging problems and regulations. Schneider Electric looks at the phasing out of the centralised distribution system in the electrical distribution architecture in buildings and industry (identified as the largest transmitters of gas with greenhouse effect). Moving to a decentralised system will make a positive difference in energy conservation.

Social Engineers

We feature three events – Mecosa’s launch of the innovative Hamilton Arc Sensor System; the launch of the W22 WEG electric motor by Zest and the EPLAN breakfast hosted by BLM Software and Service.
