Electricity + Control - November 2010

November 2010

Our November 2010 issue begins with an informative article by Henry du Preez on ‘Induction motor rotor bars'. He discusses the criticality of the rotor of an induction motor and what a major influence it has on the motor performance.

An article on ‘Data-centric CAD', although an academic exercise, provides a good starting point when looking at more intelligent packages to replace the standard CAD variety. This article was written by Jakob Lagendyk of SNC-Lavalin.

TridonicAtco has provided an article on ‘Electronic ballasts with long operating times'. Author Markus Jäger points out that with the PC Industry series, high reliability over many thousands of hours is achieved even at very high ambient temperatures; so the ballasts continue to operate properly even if the luminaire is occasionally exposed to high temperatures.

An article by Russ Gittleson of Light Kinetics discusses high power LED lighting applications - their design and technology and risk analysis considerations.

An ABB South Africa article, written by Edith Kikonyogo and Awie Bosman, draws on a case study in the steel industry to illustrate a structured and holistic approach to energy savings.

Irvan Damon of the Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa (SESSA) emphasises that energy efficient interventions are necessary if we are to live within our carbon budget.

In addition to our feature articles and product news, Graham Pirie of Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) highlights the concern that there has been a sharp increase in delayed payments - thus ‘hindering' the industry.

The SSI annual corporate project responsibility awards ceremony highlighted some viable and sustainable projects... such as the Outenique Waste Water Treatment Works Filtration Facilities project which received a Gold award - read more about awards in our Light+Current feature.

Our Social Engineers' pages are packed with familiar faces from the industry. We feature Zest at the Zest/Weg cocktail function held on 28 September and several photographs taken at Electra Mining held in October 2010.
