October 2010
October... already? I have a 2010 to-do list as long as my arm and I am not going to get through it in three months. Is it just me... or does time fly for everyone? Oh well...
As always, we have a line up of insightful articles by experts in their fields as well as the most up to date products on the market. In addition to the technical articles, we have some general news which you will find interesting. How fascinating this industry is... how fast things move... and change!

These are ‘characterisation' and ‘tolerance' testing - each determined by the way in which the unit under test (UUT) is to be used as well as the accuracy required by the user. Cables and accessories Terry Cousins of TLC Engineering Solutions discusses a range of instrumentation used in cables and switchgear testing equipment. This will be of particular interest to engineers responsible for operation and maintenance of electrical distribution systems, manufacturers and testing authorities. Earthing and lightning protection Is your building sufficiently protected - inside and out? Lee-Anne Chapman of Advanced Lightning Solutions poses the question in this feature. She highlights the negative effects of direct and indirect lightning strikes to a business and emphasises the importance of a risk analysis before designing a lightning protection system (LPS). Industrial wireless Bernd Horrmeyer of Phoenix Contact discusses sophisticated and demanding tasks that require the extended use of automation technology and can now use cabling solutions - fit for the future. Pressure and level measurement Electronic Pressure Measurement: Part 3 - describes how the application of electronic pressure measurement is generally assigned to one of three areas - the monitoring of critical system pressure, the control of pressure or the indirect measurement of process values. Eugen Gaßman and Anna Gries of WIKA discuss standard applications in these three areas and give an overview of the demands placed on electronic pressure measuring instruments. Parts 1 and 2 of Electronic Pressure Measurement appeared in Electricity+Control in July and September 2010 respectively. Are you EnviroFicient? Two articles in the Are You EnviroFicient feature indicate that the ‘green' topic can no longer be put to one side. Hugh Lindsay and Terrence Tobin of Schneider Electric present opportunities to optimise energy usage and describe Enterprise Energy Management (EEM) - a method which supports any company's objectives to minimise operating expenses, increase net operating income, improve tenant satisfaction and achieve high profile energy efficiency ratings.
In the second article, Anton Cordier, Becker van Niekerk and Peet Townsend of Design Thinking Solutions (DTS) discuss their leading edge designs as alternative energy solutions - in particular the HAWK (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) SCT (Sea Current Turbine) kites.
