Prof Jandrell highlights the importance of ‘maintenance’ in his comment this month… and this reflects in many of our articles. Every new development, every safety review, every investment made or refurbishment… all take place as a result of regular maintenance. The design of a brushless dc machine; achieving an effective alarm strategy in a power station, predictive maintenance solutions, the significance of selecting the correct high containment valves for the safe transfer of powders… the urgency of conserving energy in everything we do… occur as a result of regular maintenance programmes which in turn lead to safer and more efficient practices.
Until next time!

In the article Initial design and development of a brushless dc machine for high power, slow speed applications, Gerhard Botha of Neu Bergmann Technik describes a new and exciting development which is ‘hot off the press’!
Henk de Swardt of Marthinusen & Coutts asks whether that condemned motor is actually Beyond economical repair?
Hazardous areas and safety An article by Nirmal Narotam of PAS Automation Services South Africa and Barend Estherhuizen of Lethabo Power Station discuss the rapid decline in the number of annunciated alarms resulting from the ‘documentation and rationalisation' methodology being applied to the ‘outside plant' at Lethabo. It is important to note that efficiency and safety principles were not compromised in the process. Plant maintenance, test and measurement Christo van der Walt of Engineering Dynamics discusses how predictive maintenance systems on large rotating equipment, such as vibration monitoring systems, can help a plant meet business and production goals by extending maintenance intervals and eliminating unexpected downtime. Valves and actuators Vinod Bhasin of Sigma Tech writes about High Containment Valves (HCVs) and how they should be selected based on seal tightness, low occupational exposure level (OEL), ease of operation and low maintenance. Are you EnviroFicient? Let THEM pay for energy - writes Barry Bredenkamp - pointing a finger at those who don't pay their electricity bills, who are illegally connected to the grid, who leave the streetlights burning 24/7, who run full baths of water, who leave lights on day in and day out - in homes and offices. The strong message is that we should not underestimate the power of individual effort - and if you can improve the way you use energy, do so!
