Electricity + Control - April 2012

April 2012

We have a good mix of articles in this edition... with almost every one placing ‘energy efficiency' at the centre of the discussion. The article in our energy and enviroFiciency feature is particularly relevant, emphasising the importance of taking the standard ISO 50 001 seriously and questioning whether or not South Africa is ready for it.

The new group that has formed to further lightning research is an exciting initiative, especially as it invites participation from others who are interested in this phenomenon. We wish those who have formed LIGHTS (Lightning Interest Group for Health, Technology and Science) the best in their efforts - and we look forward to ‘flashes' on their progress from time to time.

Every now and then an idea comes up which adds another dimension to a product! Well, you may have heard a little about our new website - ‘E+C Spot On' - its first stage of development having just been completed. E+C Spot On is a new way of reading articles that appear in Electricity+Control... but will become much more in time.

I encourage you all to visit http://www.eandcspoton.co.za and see for yourselves!

Have a safe and restful Easter break.

Logic module - with on-board Ethernet
By J Ploch and C Röschke, Siemens

Logic modules have stood their ground in automation technology for many years. The new models have additional functions, such as on-board Ethernet interfaces - thus widening the fields of application considerably.

L I G H T S: ‘Lightning Interest Group for Health, Technology and Science'
By M Grant, University of the Witwatersrand

A platform for lightning researchers to share their knowledge of lightning physics and related sciences has been recently formed. It will work towards a better understanding of lightning protection and provide broad lightning safety education through open public engagements.

Avert the dirt: Choose the right flowmeter to avoid effects of fouling
By J Boxley, KROHNE ZA

The author discusses situations where flowmeters are more than an alternative to conventional mechanical meters.

Investigation and efficiency analysis: 405 km transmission line with series compensation
By R Gouws, North-West University

This article presents an investigative case study and efficiency analysis of the 405 km, 420 kV transmission line between Insukamini substation in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and the Matimba thermal power station in South Africa (which is routed through Botswana).

Durban leads with LED
By M Debowski, Philips Lighting, and S O'Donoghue, Consultant

The UN Conference on Climate Change, COP17, held in Durban in November 2011, presented an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the efficiency of low energy LED (light emitting diode) street lights through the installation of 149 LED lights in six streets in the precinct of the Durban International Conference Centre.

Future of green lighting
By F Mitchell, Drive Control Corporation

Lighting consumes a large amount of electricity, and compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs have become popular because they offer improved efficiency. However due to increasing environmental concerns around CFLs, light emitting diode (LED) lamps are emerging as the most eco-friendly, energy efficient solution for lighting.

ISO 50 001 Black or White or BRIGHT?
By B Bredenkamp, South African National Development Institute (SANEDI)

ISO 50 001 provides an opportunity to formalise and enhance the way we implement, measure and report on energy management in South Africa, but it requires a significant commitment to succeed in optimising all those potential 50 001 opportunities!
