R75m social housing project
Social housing provider, Communicare, launched its R75 million Drommedaris Social Housing Project in Brooklyn, Cape Town. The innovative housing project will offer some welcome relief for the elderly, low income earners, disabled and those with special needs. It will provide 219 affordable rental units and all within easy access of Cape Town's Integrated Rapid Transport system.
Cornubia - KZN's R26 bn jewel
The R26 billion Cornubia public/private partnership between eThekwini Municipality and Tongaat Hulett Developments is strategically situated on Durban's northern corridor. The development is part of eThekwini's slum clearance project.
Hangberg Upgrade
Last year, the uprising by the Hangberg informal settlement residents sent shock waves through South Africa when CapeTown city officials demolished newly built structures after a moratorium had been put in place.
Upgrading Kosovo
Gita Goven, CEO of award winning company Arg Design in Cape Town, has fought hard for the urban development of Cape Town's densest informal settlement, Kosovo. From the time that Goven designed and planned an innovative, sustainable development on the 19 ha site, Kosovo's fortunes have not improved much.
Good news for Joe Slovo residents
In June 2009 Joe Slovo informal settlement residents' battled government in the Constitutional Court and lost. The Joe Slovo informal settlement has blotted government's N2 Gateway copybook. The integrated human settlement pilot project has been blighted by mismanagement and delivery protests.
The troubled project has been identified for an upgrade in the Minister's budget, whereby almost 400 000 households will benefit from infrastructure and housing delivery by 2014.
