Pennyville vs Fleurhof

Integrated housing development company, Calgro M3 CEO Ben Pierre Malherbe, offered an insight into the lessons that were learnt from the joint venture with the City of Johannesburg at Pennyville Ext 1, and implemented at Fleurhof.

Honeydew Grove Ext 7

Nedbank Corporate Property Finance, Affordable Housing division has put into place tailored development funding of R55 million for the development and completion of Phase 1 and Phase 2 of Honeydew Grove Ext 7, a R110 million residential development, north of Randburg.

The bottom line

The Bank Association South Africa's General Manager of Human Settlements, Pierre Venter, shared housing statistics. In the affordable housing market, 7% of South African adults are mortgage holders; 45% have formal property title but no mortgage; 24% only have informal title; 24% rent; and 18% of households can afford to buy a new home.

Water security

At the first South African Water & Energy Forum in Sandton, Professor Tony Allan, Stockholm Water Prize Laureate, talked about the global perspectives on water resource management facing water-stressed economies. His award winning research has redefined water policy and water management.

Water footprinting

Research from Pancho Ndebele from Emvelo, a Pan African green economy company, shows that a staggering 40 billion hours are spent each year collecting and hauling water in Africa. Approximately 5,3 billion, or two thirds of the world's population will suffer from water shortages in 2025. A billion people, or one in six, worldwide do not have access to clean water. And almost every 15 seconds a child dies from waterborne diseases, 1,8 million each year.

45 000 trees for low cost housing

Food & Trees for Africa will receive R4,05 million from The National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund. This means we will be distributing trees to 45 000 residents of low cost housing settlements across South Africa, says Joanne Lee Rolt.
