ElectricityandControl August 2016The August 2016 issue of Electricity+Control has interesting topics… One Cable Automation offers total flexibility, reduced costs and fewer sources of error! Certainly worth a read. The information that we receive from Pontins is always useful… with this month’s focus on lightning and induced surges… and the damage that these cause to vulnerable Free Field PV Power Plants.

We have a look at safety in product quality in beverage production. A comprehensive article on Smart Transformer Condition Monitoring discusses the use of a Rogowski Coil to make an open-ended and flexible sensor that wraps around the conductor to be measured.

The feature which we introduced earlier this year… In Conversation With… has Peter Middleton discussing microgrids and grid automation with an expert from ABB who describes the core purpose of the microgrid as that of ‘managing and combining the available power to best meet demand’.

Our last feature article examines Thorium as a safe nuclear fuel… and in fact, Steenkampskraal Thorium Mine in the Western Cape will start producing this alternative to Uranium in approximately two years from now.

All this… and so much more in the August 2016 issue.

Be safe in August.

Thorium – a Safe Nuclear Fuel

Trevor Blench, Steenkampskraal

There is growing awareness that thorium is a safe alternative to uranium as a nuclear fuel and that its use will limit nuclear proliferation. To meet this demand, the Steenkampskraal thorium mine in the Western Cape will begin production in about 24 months.
