Lighting in Design - February 2010

February 2010

It is impossible for South Africans to come away from a visit to any of our new stadiums and not feel proud of the remarkable achievements of our construction industry.

In this issue of Lighting in Design our topics range from stadium lighting, in particular two of our beautiful urban landmarks, to the new pedestrian bridge over the N1, to the vibrant décor for the only casino in Africa linked to a racecourse. We also look at fundamentals including designing with energy efficiency in mind, planning for design success, and tipping the balance in favour of LED lighting for outdoor applications. Enjoy!

The beautiful game: lights on

Stadiums must be lit and we look at the field lighting of four stadiums; two new (Cape Town and Mbombela) and two revamped (Loftus and Free State). The final lighting specifications were based on FIFA requirements and the lighting chosen had to complement the architecture, illuminate the players and the field, and supply sufficient light for the television cameras. Lighting Innovations handled the installations at all four venues.

Golden Horse Casino: lighting given free rein

The Golden Horse Casino Hotel in Pietermaritzburg, the only casino in Africa linked to a racecourse, recently had a facelift. Samantha Esra, senior interior designer of Real Visions Interiors, was tasked with the interior design of the casino and given the brief: "Design something that will survive into the next seven years." Lighting in Design spoke to Sam about her love of colour, neon and fusing different styles and how she used these to create an extravagant, colourful and vibrant new interior, from one that used to be dark and somewhat old-fashioned.

LEDwatch

LEDs provide a highly efficient, long lasting and environmentally friendly source of light. Energy savings from using LED luminaires for outdoor applications, however, are often not enough to offset their high initial cost. James Brodrick of the US Department of Energy's Building Technologies Programme takes a look at how maintenance savings can tip the balance in favour of solid-state lighting for applications, including outdoor, where the cost of maintenance is relatively high.
