Lighting in Design - March 2011

March 2011

It has been many years since we hosted a CIE event in this country so it will be a pleasure to welcome international delegates to the 27th session of the CIE, the International Commission of Illumination, from the 10th to the 15th of July this year. According to Trevor Milne, President of IESSA, it promises to be the biggest lighting event ever to be held in South Africa, with both IESSA and Lux Pacifica electing to conduct their annual general meetings at the same time. International response, says Trevor, has been exceptional and it would be most rewarding see South Africans match this enthusiasm.

The CIE is devoted to advancing knowledge and providing standardisation for the improvement of the lighted environment. Its five day conference, to be held at Sun City, starts on Monday the 11th of July and covers a range of topics from road surface reflectivity in applications of low height mounted luminaires to the effects of dawn simulation on quality of life in elementary school children, and everything in between. As to be expected, the provisional programme indicates that there will be a number of papers discussing energy optimisation as well as the effectiveness of LEDs.

Some of the topics look to be fascinating and it is a wonderful opportunity for all professionals with an interest in lighting to take the opportunity of hearing what international experts have to share. The conference is a must for architects, electrical engineers, consulting engineers and lighting professionals within municipalities, Eskom, the Central Energy Fund and those in private practice. The provisional programme is outlined on the website so visit www.cie2011.co.za to find out more and to register.

Bold lighting on the Umhlanga Ridge

The Umhlanga Ridge in KwaZulu-Natal has a new landmark in the Liberty Life Head Office and Southern Sun Garden Court Hotel Development. QDP Lighting and Electrical Design was asked to provide a low maintenance lighting solution that was bold, though conservative, for the façades and internal public areas of this high profile development.

Lighting the Randlords Bar

Pamboukian lightdesign was responsible for conceptualising the lighting of this cool Johannesburg night spot. Atmospheric pools of light, a reflective ceiling, strip LEDs and feature chandeliers all contribute to the generally excellent ambience of Randlords Bar, high up on the 22nd floor of a Braamfontein office block.

Zoned for fun

The Zone, Phase 2, in Rosebank was designed to appeal to the aspirant urban youth market and the lighting concept had to take this into account while maintaining a design connection with the original Zone@Rosebank. The concept worked and the night time vibe of this new piazza enhances what is already a trendy and appealing urban precinct.

Reflections on reflectors

Interviews and research by Eneref Institute show that better performing reflectors are worth striving for, even with the engineering and aesthetic challenges for the designer, price-point hurdles for the marketer and ROI qualms for the facility owner. Seth Warren Rose tells us why.
