Mechanical Technology - January 2005

January 2005

The dominant position of mechanical drives such as turbines in the high end of the powerdrive market is being challenged by four-pole synchronous motors.

Today, large four-pole synchronous motors and drives are more energy efficient, quieter, environmentally friendly and require less manintenance than their mechanical counterparts. Capital investment outlay is also lower, and they have greater production flexibility at a lower operating cost.

Efficiency levels are higher with four-pole synchronous motors between 97 and 99% compared to the 35 to 40% of a gas turbine.
