Mechanical Technology - April 2010

April 2010

Our April edition is dominated by its CAE feature and details a number of international success stories, all connected by one common thread, the use of PTC's products in engineering processes. The cover itself features GRW Engineering, now SA's leading road tanker manufacturer and an exporter of more than 50 of its product. This company is only 15 years old and has always based its design processes on Pro/Engineer, the PTC CAD package available in SA from Product One. Our cover story features RSD, the rolling stock and defense division of DCD-DORBYL. The story tells of the successful use of Pro/Engineer and of the newly deployed Wildfire PDM package to manage the complex data and drawing revision processes required by international military clients.

Mathcad - a new springboard for integrated engineering design

Hatch Africa's Johan Palm tells us of his company's global adoption of Mathcad as the starting point for engineering data production. Hatch has supplemented the Mathcad library with its own globally accessible Hatch Calculation Toolkit, available to offices worldwide on a collaborative basis. The Hatch version is also able to link seamlessly with both FEA packages and with CAD packages, allowing 3D models of designs to be automatically generated directly from engineering calculations completed in Mathcad.

Best-fit gearbox design - a lowest LCC philosophy

In our power transmission feature, we take a look at Hansen Transmissions and talk about the company’s design philosophy for industrial gearboxes, a philosophy that has found favour with Eskom for Medupi and Kusile’s air cooled condenser drives.

Stainless steel and carbon steel in mining

We publish an abridged version a presentation made at the SMMH 2009 entitled ‘Stainless steel and carbon steel in mining and related materials handling' in our modern materials feature, which gives an excellent overview of how to go about selecting appropriate materials for specific applications.

Concentrated solar power - the small heliostat solution

Innovative technology this month features concentrated solar power (CSP) and in particular, a solution from eSolar that goes against the conventional thinking of large parabolic heliostats. This solution uses instead smaller flat mirrors with much smaller drives. The system is coupled to a sophisticated IT control system that automatically focuses every mirror onto the solar tower, creating virtual parabolas that are easy to calibrate and significantly more accurate.
