Modern Mining - March 2010

March 2010

Exploration for uranium and development of new uranium mines is now one of the most buoyant sectors of the mining industry. This is reflected in this issue, with both the Rössing South and Mkuju River projects in Namibia and Tanzania respectively being covered. Industrial minerals are featured in an article on Infrasors, a miner of dolomite and silica, while a new safety development for coal mines - an inertisation system to extinguish coal mine fires - is also highlighted.
Our special feature in the March issue is surface mining contracting and the two companies we have selected for profiles are COMS, which specialises in the contract mining of the smaller, more challenging, coal deposits and Stefanutti Stocks Mining Services, the mining arm of the giant Stefanutti Stocks group. Andru Mining, another opencast mining contractor, is the subject of our cover story.

Rossing South - bigger and better than Rossing

The Rössing South deposit, just several kilometres from the Rössing mine, is - according to Extract Resources - one of the most significant uranium discoveries in decades.

Mkuju River PFS lifts production by 48%

The PFS on the Nyota prospect within the Mkuju River uranium project in Tanzania, indicates that Nyota can support a mine producing 3,7 Mlb (1 678 tonnes) of U3O8 annually. This represents a 48 % increase on the projected production envisaged in the Scoping Study.

Infrasors - a mining company in the making

Currently focused on the mining of dolomite and silica, Rivonia-based Infrasors, founded in 2007, is keen to diversify into other metals and minerals, such as iron ore, manganese and fluorspar.

New plant to fight coal fires is a 'world first'

The world's first ever mobile Floxal membrane nitrogen plant has been developed by Air Liquide on behalf of the Collieries Committee of the Chamber of Mines.
