Don't make your waste someone else's problem!

Where does your used chemical packaging go? Join the RPMASA to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. Do drain and empty ALL product from used packaging and monitor disposal to prevent causing poisonings and pollution from contaminated drums being used by the poor for domestic use. Please recover used drums for safe re-use through an RPMASA member, or use a reconditioner who is a member of the RPMASA and has been audited to the RPMASA Audit Protocol for compliance. Members have Key element Guidelines and Codes of Best Practice to assist them, as well as National Standard SANS 10406: reprocessing of previously certified packaging to comply with.

The Waste Act requires Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)* (see below) and recovery and re-use of waste followed by recycle and landfill as the last resort! EPR under the Waste Act puts a responsibility on the product manufacturer for EPR to improve use of resources. Drum and IBC reprocessing saves approximately half the energy and emissions for mining and processing virgin resources whether for steel or plastic for each time reprocessed and also savings in the amount of ore required and transported, thus reducing further emissions and energy use.

Drums and Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) are too valuable a resource to waste and can be safely re-used several times if reprocessed or reconditioned correctly. Users should share with packaging suppliers (new or reprocessed), the type of product to be packed to ensure correct packaging performance specification for their product so as to reduce risk of failure and liability.

Let's work together for a sustainable future through EPR for safe recovery, reprocess and re-use of drums and IBCs!
