Greener off-highway trucking

Designed to help lower greenhouse gas emissions, Caterpillar's Oil Renewal System (ORS) provides a new, cost-effective and environmentally friendly way of managing oil usage, its maintenance and disposal on Cat's 3500B off-highway truck engine series.

"By injecting controlled amounts of used oil from the crankcase into the engine's fuel return line, ORS burns off waste oil as the machine operates," explains Wally Parsons, senior product manager: after-sales at Barloworld Equipment, the exclusive Caterpillar dealer in southern Africa.

With the addition of replacement oil at strategic intervals, ORS dramatically extends the period between oil changes; reduces servicing time; and cuts both the costs and environmental impacts of handling waste engine oil. During day-to-day operations, ORS activates automatically when operating parameters, such as optimal engine temperature, are reached. Measured in five minute intervals, the amount of oil injected varies according to the rate of fuel consumed and the load factor.
"The ratio of oil to fuel can also be adjusted to suit specific job site conditions and applications by using Cat's Electronic Technician (Cat ET) service tool," Parsons continues.
Nominally, the amount of oil burned via the ORS process equates to about 19 ℓ per 3 800 ℓof fuel, with ‘make-up' oil added during regular fuel service intervals.
"Remarkably, the continuous addition of new oil maintains a high level of engine oil quality, often significantly better than in engines without ORS," Parsons adds.
Initially, ORS has been approved for use on the Cat 777D, 785C, 789C, 793C, 797 and 797B.
