German multinational, Voith, is a socially responsible group of companies that assists communities across the globe by raising funds, organising and sponsoring events to assist organisations in creating awareness of finding cures for diseases that pose a threat to the well being of people.
Voith Turbo South Africa (VTZA), South African subsidiary of the Germany-based multinational, takes social responsibility equally seriously and reaches out to communities by donating to and supporting various charitable organisations. The Dischem ‘Ride for Sight' cycle race, staged annually to raise funds for research into Retinitis Pigmentosa (RT), a disease that causes blindness in young and old, is undoubtedly one of the highlights on the Voith charity events calendar. The Voith team supports the ‘Ride for Sight' event by volunteering assistance and, because all entry fees are donated to the University of Cape Town's RT research team who works tirelessly to discover a cure for the disease, a significant number of Voith employees enter the cycle race - quite a gruelling race that taxes the fitness levels of even the fittest cyclists.
Voith has avidly supported the annual Dischem Ride for Sight cycle race through a number of years and, as always, the Witfield-based Voith team, turned out in full force to help with the Voith ‘watering hole'. "The volunteer ‘Voithonians' that manned the biggest and most important watering hole at the 2010 cycle race, kept up Voith's tradition of winning ‘the best water hole, with the best branding and the best spirit' competition, in this year's race for the Dischem RT Foundation", says Voith marketing manager Roy Webster.
Volunteers gathered at the crack of dawn on Sunday, 21 February 2010 and by 8:15 they were hard at work handing out sustenance to the first of the cyclists to pass the Voith watering hole. Hans Voshol and Jan Dreyer again made sure of enough food for the hungry volunteers, cyclists and their supporters and the two-man culinary team braaied mouth watering hamburger patties. Nobody went hungry and Graham Russell, Voith Turbo South Africa MD and his wife, were among the many cyclists that stopped at the Voith watering hole for a cold water sachet and a bite to eat before continuing on the last stretch of the race.
Dischem, one of South Africa's largest pharmacy chains, actively and generously supports many and varied local charities, including the RT Foundation, which is probably among the most deserving of these.
