Upgrading of the John Vorster Interchange

A new on and off-ramp at the John Vorster Interchange on the N1 freeway will be opened to the driving public at 12:00 on Thursday, 21 July 2011.

The new on and off-ramp will improve traffic flow at the interchange and is a major step in the improvement of the traffic capacity of the interchange, which are being revamped as part of The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited's (SANRAL's) Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP).

  • A new free flow loop on-ramp has been built on the north-west side of the bridge over the N1 to provide access to the northbound carriageway of the freeway for traffic heading towards Polokwane. Road users travelling north (towards the Centurion CBD) along John Vorster Drive (from Irene) wanting to access the N1 northbound towards Polokwane must keep on the left hand side of the road. After crossing the bridge over the N1 they must exit left onto the new loop on-ramp as indicated on the attached diagram.
  • Road users on John Vorster Drive will no longer be able to turn right onto the current northbound on-ramp to gain access to the freeway. This ramp will be exclusively utilised by traffic travelling south (from the Centurion CBD) in John Vorster Drive that want to access the N1 northbound.
  • The current off-ramp from the N1 south (from Polokwane) providing access to John Vorster Drive (to Centurion) splits into two off-ramps. The off-ramp forks into two separate roads just after the point where the current off-ramp breaks away from the N1. The road on the left remains unchanged and is the current off-ramp that provides access to John Vorster Drive. The new road to the right provides access to Witch-hazel Road as indicated on the attached diagram. This off-ramp can now be utilised by road users to gain access to Technopark, Highveld and Ecopark without travelling via the John Vorster Drive/West Avenue intersection. Although the opening of the on and off-ramp is a significant milestone of the GFIP project, it does not conclude the construction works in the area. Road users are requested to be patient during the implementation process and are advised to reduce speeds, observe road signs and exercise caution, while familiarising themselves with the changes.

SANRAL apologises in advance for any inconvenience that will be caused by this implementation process as well as the completion of all construction work in the area.

SANRAL also wishes to thank road users for their patience and understanding during the construction works.
