Eskom's weekly system status bulletin: 2

Monday, 16 January 2012: This is Eskom's second weekly update on the state of the power system. The Bulletin is in line with Eskom's commitment to transparent and regular communication on the power system, which is expected to be constrained for at least the next two years.

Trends in the supply and demand of power in South Africa are as follows:

  • Monday 16 January: The capacity available to meet this evening's peak demand is 33 776 MW (including open cycle gas turbines) while demand is forecast at 31 781 MW. Current planned maintenance stands at 4 661 MW. Unplanned outages are 4 274 MW.
  • Sunday 15 January: Peak demand of 30 636 MW met by available capacity of 32 338 MW.
  • Saturday 14 January: Peak demand of 29 454 MW met by available capacity of 33 482 MW.
  • Friday (13 January): Peak demand of 30 197 MW met by available capacity of 32 088 MW.
  • Thursday (12 January): Peak demand of 30 636 MW met by available capacity of 31 832 MW.

Peak demand for the rest of this week is forecast at: 31 825 MW on Tuesday, 32 024 MW on Wednesday, 32 111 MW on Thursday, 32 015 MW on Friday, 29 933 MW on Saturday, and 29 475 MW on Sunday.

Eskom continues to make progress with its programme of planned maintenance. The performance of its power stations has improved since last week. However, the system remains tight.

We urge all South Africans to partner with us to keep the lights on and save 10% of their electricity usage. This will make it significantly easier to manage the power system during this challenging time, while also enabling us to do planned maintenance to ensure the reliability of our plant.
