December 2005

WiMAX is a disruptive technology. It is already starting to open the door to increased competition in the telecommunications industry by enabling new service providers to compete with incumbents by offering mobile and portable services.

At the same time, the mobile industry is racing toward solutions beyond 3G, namely super 3G, with major equipment vendors developing OFDM-based solutions. Major equipment vendors are positioning themselves to support WiMAX, as well as evolved 3G solutions, to support the greatest range of services.

Accelerated success of WiMAX will depend on it being focused on the aspects of the value chain that are most vulnerable to disruption. Presenting WiMAX solely as a superior network technology is not enough. The industry must pay greater attention to the service ecosystem to leapfrog other installed telecom solutions. See Page 4.
