XMEGATM is a new reference for 8/16-bit microcontroller system performance. Although 8-bit MCUs continue to be the most widely used, the increasing processing requirements of many applications suggest a transition to faster processors.
Much publicity is made of 32-bit devices, expected to bring more MIPS to address the new challenges of our times. However, Atmel believes reality is more complex than that, because the meaning of performance that designers expect from their systems is more than MIPS alone. By adding innovative features, high-end peripherals and conserving CPU cycles, an 8/16-bit MCU like XMEGATM can achieve superior system performance while maintaining low power characteristics and code compatibility.
