Quantum - June 2010

June 2010

The June 2010 edition's features are Communications, Embedded Systems and Security & Protection.

The first article in Communications, from information supplied by SEACOM, describes how the company's fibre optic cable links Africa to the world. The second, from information supplied by DS Communications, demonstrates how AWR's Visual System SimulatorTM (VSS) provides early insight in the design process, about how a circuit, subsystem or system will perform. The use of adapters in network analysis is discussed (from information supplied by Agilent Technologies) with specific reference to analyzer techniques where calibration kits are not available. The fourth article reviews Motorola's dual user-selectable 3.5G radios.
Embedded Systems: The first article describes a solution for high-end embedded computing using Kontron's basic motherboards with high-end graphics. Second, Frank Barlow at Barlow Communications provides insight into the effects of changing IT technology and the possible strain on resources that may occur as a result, before a review of the Local Interconnect Network (LIN) bus.

In Security & Protection, the first article is a product review of Tyco Electronics' PolyZen device that provides input power protection for portable electronics. In the fifth and concluding part in the series about ‘everything a system needs', Oliver Kistner at Schroff GmbH discusses extensively the role of power supplies in the systems concept.
