Quantum - October 2010

October 2010

The October 2010 edition covers Communications and Embedded Systems, as well as Security & Protection.

The first article in Communications considers USB 3.0: In his article ‘Shaking up the status quo' by Jim Choate at Agilent Technologies, Jim shares his perspective on the changes that the USB 3.0 standard is expected to precipitate in the market. He also discusses the importance of digital standards and the critical role of measurement expertise in enabling interoperability. Also in this feature, Jay Stewart at JDSU demystifies fixed mobile convergence (FMC), explaining its evolution, advantages and challenges. He also considers the role of test, monitoring and service assurance in this field.

In Embedded Systems, Tsun-kit Chin at National Semiconductor Corporation discusses the optimization of BNC footprint designs for digital video equipment, focussing specifically on Samtec's True75TM BNC (bayonet, non-continuous) connectors. Then, an article from information supplied by NXP Semiconductors reveals code read protection (CRP), with specific reference to the company's LPC1100 and LPC1300 devices.

Two articles are presented in Security & Protection. The first article ‘Securing Data Centres: A unique opportunity for ISPs', from information supplied by Arbor Networks, focuses specifically on distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks suffered by enterprize Internet data centra (IDC), and reveals how Peakflow SP may enable ISPs to develop sufficient DDoS protection services. The second and final article in this feature, by Rudolf Keller at EDS UPS, compares rotary and static uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) against technology application considerations of the same.
