IETT Istanbul, Turkey’s largest transport
operator, has ordered 750 new buses
for service in the metropolis on two
continents. All of them will be fitted with
the proven Voith DIWA.5 automatic
transmission.
The buses in the Turkish capital have
to cope with enormous demands: high
traffic density, congestion and stop-
start traffic are the order of the day. To
ensure that passengers can travel more
comfortably and economically, IETT
has purchased a total of 750 low-floor
buses from the Turkish manufacturer,
Otokar.
With its order to Voith, Otokar once
again decided in favour of the DIWA.5
automatic transmission. Voith delivered
the first 150 transmissions in 2012,
and the first buses are currently enter-
Refined knife-gate valve range
New from Aveng Manufacturing DFC is the
lugged wafer (LW) valve range, a refinement of
Insamcor’s knife-gate concept with applications
in mining, power generation, steel production
and paper manufacture.
Developed over several years to solve prob-
lems typically associated with knife-gate valve
operation, the LW range features, at its core,
a mechanically restrained primary body seal
specially moulded to eliminate seat pockets
and cavities, and a secondary transverse seal to
increase the wear life of the primary by acting as
a scraper. The result is completely trouble-free
operation in slurry applications.
Other refinements incorporated in Insamcor’s
LW design include
a valve gate guided
throughout the full
length of its stroke,
self-cleaning flush-
ing of corners in
the sealing area
to prevent deposit
build-up, and a full
bore unrestricted
flow area to elimi-
nate seat pockets
and cavities.
Higher driving comfort for Voith buses
ing service, operating in all parts of the
city and on routes across the Bosporus
bridges. IETT places great importance
on maximum accessibility for disabled
passengers and the 12 m Kent buses
with three doors allow stepless entry
for commuters.
Vehicle availability is another deci-
sive factor for Istanbul Transport. The
local Voith service organisation will
ensure trouble-free application of the
transmissions.
Voith Turbo and Otokar formed a
strategic partnership, which has been
in place since 2009. The bus manufac-
turer has been relying on Voith DIWA for
many years – an example is the recent
transmission order for 100 city buses in

Izmir. After all, DIWA automatics have
been developed specifically for opera-
tion on routes with numerous stops and
heavy traffic.
The proven DIWA power-split prin-
ciple allows smooth acceleration across
a speed range where other transmis-
sions need to shift two to three times.
This means up to 50% fewer gearshifts,
resulting in less wear and higher driv-
ing comfort. The transmission concept
is supplemented by the topography-
dependent gear shifting program,
SensoTop.
Voith DIWA transmissions are also
supplied to OEMs and operate on mul-
tiple bus brands in the South Africa
market.
Submersible hydro-solids pumps
“The heavy duty design of the wet
end of these pumps also increases
service life, with minimal maintenance
requirements – and the pumps offer sub-
stantial power consumption savings.”
HS solids pump, with capacities to
636 m³/h, can provide pressure heads
of up to 40 m. Due to the recessed,
non-clog impeller, solids or fibrous
material (up to 200 mm depending on
pump size) can enter the suction inlet
and be expelled through the pump
discharge. There are six pump sizes in
the HS range – smaller models handle
standard gravities (SGs) of up to 1,1
and larger models of up to 1,5. HS
pumps are available with submersible
motors designed for efficient operation
in hazardous environments.
All components are locally manufac-
tured, which means these pumps are
readily available and a large stock hold-
ing of spares and raw materials ensures
quick delivery. Another advantage of
the design is that the majority of spares
are completely interchangeable, which
reduces inventory management costs
and simplifies on-site repairs.
Alert Pumpmor pumps are available
from Becker Mining South Africa in hori-
zontal end suction, vertical spindle and
submersible configurations, in different
materials to suit specific applications.
The company employs a fully inte-
grated ISO quality management system
as part of a dedicated design, manufac-
turing, testing and repair facility.
Included in Becker Mining South Africa’s ex-
tensive range of locally manufactured slurry
and solids transfer pumps are submersible Alert
Pumpmor Hydro-Solids pumps, designed for opti-
mum efficiency, low maintenance and extended
service life in harsh operating conditions.
“These hydro-solids pumps (model
HTMS), which are manufactured to strin-
gent OEM specifications, are designed to
handle large, stringy and abrasive solids
in tough environments,” says Gavin
Swart, Becker Mining South Africa.
“Alert Pumpmor HS pumps are used
in many applications on the mines,
including carbon transfer. The open
vane design of this range ensures
reduced carbon breakage, compared
with rubber lined, closed vane con-
ventional pumps.
