MODERN QUARRYING
October - November 2013
founded in 1988 by Nico Heyns and
Helenus Scholtz, who have been part-
ners for the past 24 years. The group has
been transformed into a leading supplier
of aggregates, readymix and hollow core
in the Western Cape. In 2000, Heyns and
Scholtz purchased their 65 ha quarry, situ-
ated on the picturesque Vissershok Road
in Durbanville, and its beautiful canola are
always a lovely site on the property.
Portland Quarry produces construc-
tion aggregates, primarily crushed stone
and dust from the natural deposits of the
Malmesbury Hornfels. In 2000 the quarry
underwent a major facelift and new offices
were built, a decent entrance road scraped
and new crushers installed. Only a year
after the opening of Portland Quarry,
three readymix plants were installed, pro-
viding a range of concrete for the entire
spectrum of the construction industry.
The Por tland Hollowcore and
Readymix facilities are situated on the
quarry premises, making it easy for the
company to ensure an effective manage-
ment system.
While the quarry and readymix
divisions are fairly constant, Portland
Hollowcore has made considerable inroads
in the construction industry in theWestern
Cape. Keeping up with the ongoing Green
initiative in South Africa, the company’s
hollow core panels are constructed to be
resource efficient, accommodating the
new environmental regulations that came
into effect in late 2011.
This year, the company has celebrated
its 25
th
anniversary, a significant milestone
in its history, and is looking forward to
taking this further in 2014.
Portland is involved in improving the
lives of its surrounding community, and
is well ahead with plans for its second
annual Portland charity golf challenge
Portland has a good relationship with Volvo, and to
date, has been satisfied with the service.

(PCGC). Marketing administrator Aniska
Heyns says that after the resounding
success of the first PCGC, “we decided
to continue this tradition by involv-
ing clients and suppliers in the event.
We have selected the Olympians Social
Development and Education (OSDE) pro-
gramme, as our charity for 2014.
“This is a project close to our hearts as
we have been involved withWendy Bosse
and her team in the past to help enrich
the lives of the children of our immediate
environment. This organisation is totally
committed to helping people in need.
Children of all ages have been supported
by OSDE through means of financial assis-
tance for food, clothing and school fees,
after-school care, school supplies, reha-
bilitation programmes and even sporting
and educational imbursements. Portland
has also been involved with OSDE
through means of bursary- and internship
plans in the past,”
She says there is a great need in the
rural Joostenberg area for teenagers to
be afforded a warm and safe place to
study and sleep. OSDE dreams of buy-
ing a house that can accommodate 10
to 12 high school teenagers in their very
own household. “We hope to contribute
towards this project through the 2014
PCGC.”
The PCGD takes place on 21 February
2014, and will be an unforgettable day
of golf, food, raffles, auctions, prizes and
entertainment from a special guest artist.
MQ
is going to watch this operation’s
progress with renewed interest in terms
of its growth and focus on safety and
quality production.
