Sparks Electrical News - February 2010

February 2010

One of the highlights on the Sparks Electrical News calendar is the Christmas Draw promotion. Every December a number of our advertisers sponsor gifts that our readers can win. In January, the names of the winners are drawn at a lunch for the sponsors at Crown Publications and published in the February issue. This year 110 readers received gifts from ACDC Dynamics, Banding and Identification Solutions, Bosch, Comtest, Eurolux, HellermannTyton, Makita, Legrand, Omron, Pierlite, Stone-Stamcor, TeeVee Electric, and Three-D Agencies. The gifts included multimeters, intercoms, emergency lights, torches, cooler bags, a tool kit, an angle grinder and a laser rangefinder.

Contractor's Corner

The personality of the month is Nick du Plessis of P and T Technology in Wadeville. He is regarded by many in the electrical industry as a man of integrity, and his training centre is known as a centre of excellence that produces competent electricians.

Columns

In his column, Working Knowledge, Terry Mackenzie Hoy says that the best form of advertising for electrical contractors is 'word of mouth' and that satisfied clients will always refer contractors that have done an excellent job.

Lawrence Hillery's column, On the Job, suggests that 'brevity' should be applied to the Test document.

The Gauteng Electrical Inspection Authority's Mark Palmer is concerned about the use of non-compliant components being used in electrical installations. He untangles the Electrical Installation Regulations legislation for contractors and suggests that the National Regulator for Compulsory Standards (NRCS) establishes a forum with representation from the NRCS, manufacturers, consultants and Authorised Inspection Authorities (AIAs) to enforce legislation on behalf of the Department of Labour.
