A new voluntary organisation, the Electrical Registration and Inspection Council (ERIC) will be launched in August despite opposition from key stakeholders. The Department of Labour, the Electrical Contractor's Association (ECA) and the Association of Accredited Electgrical Inspection Bodies of South Africa (AAEIASA) have all distanced themselves from ERIC until it is recognised by government; and the AAEIASA has also voiced its concern about the use of the words ‘electrical registration and inspection council' saying they are "misleading".

Personality of the Month Brian Madeley, managing director of Iso-Tech is the July Personality of the Month. In June he celebrated his 70th birthday and 50 years in the electrical industry. His advice to electrical contractors is that they should meet with suppliers, become familiar with the products and accept full training from the experts. "Never make a financial decision on a product unless all meet the same standards required. Look for service, stock availability and long-term commitment from the company," says Brian. Columns In Terry Mackenzie Hoy's column, ‘Working Knowledge' he gives advice on what contractors should do to ensure they are paid for work done... "cash is cash... and it's vital" he says.
