Unitrans, a leading transport, logistics, and integrated supply chain solutions company raked in several awards during the fourth quarter of 2023. As a result, the company is starting the new year on a high note, where they implore more South Africans to look at safety as a major concern – and to deeply entrench safety in company structures.

To end last year Gabotlamang Jarius Gabonewe, a 36-year-old Mega Bus driver, secured victory in the Overall Bus Driver category at the Hollard Highway Heroes competition.
His dedication, commitment, and outstanding performance earned him this prestigious industry award. Gabonewe, a Unitrans member since 2016, plans to use the prize money for personal investments, completing his house, and commemorating his late father with a tombstone.
Reflecting on his win, Gabonewe underscores the importance of relationships with co-workers and passengers. His commitment to road rules, careful driving, and passenger needs sets him apart. He believes that bus drivers deserve respect and recognition for their vital role in society.
As an individual in the Unitrans family, he represents the commitment of the company that is constantly gaging how to improve on the way South African roads are used.
Road safety is a critical national priority, with every individual in a vehicle at risk of accidents. According to the World Health Organization, road traffic accidents claim around 1.3 million lives globally each year, with significant economic losses for individuals, families, and nations.
South Africa faces challenges with road crash fatalities, with pedestrian fatalities accounting for 40% of all road users.
Unitrans acknowledges the severity of the situation and aligns itself with the broader national concern for road safety. The company actively engages in initiatives to address these challenges and contribute to creating safer roads – and this includes entering drivers in key competitions.
Unitrans, a member of Road Safety Partnership South Africa (RSP SA), earned recognition for its commitment to safety last year. The company received the prestigious Rio Tinto Safety Award for Best Global Contract Partner and secured two awards at the 2023 annual MasterDrive Fleet Safety Awards, winning in the Best Employer and Best Company categories for Medium Commercial Vehicles.
The dedication to safety is further highlighted by the involvement of five employees from the People Transport division in the Hollard Highway Heroes competition. Cynthia Thala, a bulk vehicle operator in the fuel transportation division, made history by becoming the first woman to secure the title of the 2023 #ThankYouTrucker competition.
