GVK-Siya Zama has completed the construction of a new Cardiac Theatre Complex and a 10-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Ahmed Al-Kadi Private Hospital in Durban. The facility is fully operational, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and ready to serve patients requiring cardiac care in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The project involved the demolition and conversion of the existing paediatrics ward into the new CICU facility, and the transformation of an open parking area into the new Cardiac Theatre Complex.
Work on site continues. GVK-Siya Zama is currently constructing a new multi-level parkade and Day Hospital, an eight-storey development with a contractual completion date of April next year. The structure includes doctors’ consulting rooms, a day ward, IVF facilities, three theatres and additional parking for patients and visitors. Ground preparation is well advanced: 17 000 cubic metres of earthworks complete, lateral support walls up, foundations and retaining walls in place. Suspended slabs are next.
Work on an eight-bed VIP Suite on the second-floor balcony is also under way. Structural steel, roofing and masonry are complete. The VIP Suite was not put out to tender but was negotiated directly with GVK-Siya Zama.
Group CEO Eben Meyburgh says the project is a clear example of what the company does well. “Healthcare infrastructure demands precision, sensitivity and commitment. We are proud of what the team has delivered for Ahmed Al-Kadi and for the patients this facility will serve.”
On the leadership front, GVK-Siya Zama has appointed Barry Elsmore-Cary as Managing Director of its KZN business. Barry brings extensive construction experience, with particular strength in civils’ projects. Meyburgh describes the appointment as a strategic move aligned with the group’s plans for regional expansion, with a focus on infrastructure and public-private partnership projects in the province.
