Thava Govender, Eskom Group Executive for Transmission and Acting Group Executive for Risk & Sustainability has stepped in as the President of the GO15 steering board for 2017/2018.
Speaking at the GO15 annual meeting in Belgium, Govender said: “As the new President, I have a personal stake – both emotional and professional, in our success. This is an industry whose success is a catalyst for economic growth in our respective countries. I, in particular, as the only member from Africa, am mindful of the enormity of this role. We have the potential to strengthen economic ties and socio-economic growth in our countries and for Africa.”
Eskom is a member of the GO15, an organisation that comprises 19 of the largest Grid Operators around the world. This includes Grid Operators from Asia, Mexico, Russia, Brazil, Africa, USA, Middle East, Australia and from Europe. The nineteen GO15 Power Grid Operators deliver electricity to over half the world’s population, accounting for more than two-thirds of the global electricity consumption, representing the backbone connecting electricity producers and consumers.
“By scope and role we have a significant role in the energy value chain as the Fourth Industrial Revolution beckons organisations to be disruptors in their industries; ‘be fast, be agile, and digitise or live with the risk of failing’,” said Govender, adding that the GO15 was committed to seizing its rightful place as a prominent voice and player in the energy industry.
The GO15 acknowledged the unprecedented evolution of the power supply system and the substantial investments required in a transforming industry towards a carbon free society. The intent is to contribute to reliable and sustainable power grids at an affordable cost.
“This vote of confidence by our members, for Eskom to lead this international organisation in 2017/2108, showcases Eskom’s leadership and technical ability as a forefront industry player and compares it to the best in the world,” noted Alain Steven, GO15 Secretary General. “Eskom plays an integral role in our Steering Board that delivers on key projects and provides innovative solutions for the transmission and system operator industry,” Steven concluded.
