Electromagnetic stirrer enhances EAF

An ABB ArcSave® electromagnetic stirrer (EMS) is to be installed on one of the world’s largest electric arc furnaces (EAF), a 370 t plant at the Çolakoǧlu Metalurji’s plant in Türkiye.

ABB’s ArcSave EMS will be installed on a jumbo 370 t capacity EAF, the largest of its kind in the country. The furnace at Çolakoǧlu’s steel plant is supplied by Primetals Technologies and will benefit from a revamp courtesy of ABB’s advanced stirring technology, aimed at enhancing the production of various carbon steel products including slabs, hot rolled coils, billets and reinforcing bars.

Founded in 1945, Çolakoǧlu Metalurji has evolved from a small-scale production facility into one of the leading steel producers in Türkiye, establishing its first rolling mill in 1969 and its melt shop in 1985. The commissioning of its first EAF in 2007 marked a significant shift towards more sustainable steelmaking. Today, Çolakoǧlu operates one of the largest and most advanced steel production facilities in Türkiye, demonstrating the company’s dedication to technological advancement, sustainability, and maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

Çolakoǧlu Metalurji’s investment in ABB’s ArcSave reflects its history as a pioneer of sustainable steel production. The EMS will help the company as it works to meet its sustainability targets via rapid chemical and thermal homogenisation in the furnace.

“This project presents many intricate technical hurdles to overcome,” said Özgür Özsoy, Plant Director at Çolakoǧlu Metalurji. “We were highly impressed with how ABB plans to navigate these challenges on the way to seamlessly integrating its ArcSave technology into our operations. This collaboration will not only enhance the efficiency and sustainability of our steelmaking processes, but leaves us confident that we have selected a partner that embodies our values of applying innovative solutions for a sustainable future.”

“This project exemplifies ABB’s versatility in working with customers,” says Zaeim Mehraban, Global Head of Sales for ABB Metallurgy. “Integrating our ArcSave electromagnetic stirrer into the world’s largest Primetals electric arc furnace underscores our commitment to enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of large-scale electric arc furnace operations and providing customers with industry-leading service and expertise.”

Commissioning of ArcSave at Çolakoǧlu’s plant is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025.

By connecting its engineering and digitalisation expertise, ABB helps industries run at high performance, while becoming more efficient, productive and sustainable. This is to help customers to ‘outperform’, a goal summarised in ABB’s ‘Engineered to Outrun’ motto.
