BOIFFILS Architectures, renowned for innovative international architectural and design interventions, has unveiled its latest project: the expansion of Terminal 2 at Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Illuminating Changi BOIFFILS Architectures lighting masterpiece

Spanning 120,000m² across three levels, this five-year project exemplifies the firm's commitment to enhancing the traveller experience through thoughtful design, with a particular focus on lighting.

A new approach to airport design

Terminal 2, originally built in the 1990s and renovated in 2003, was transformed by BOIFFILS Architectures to prioritise passenger comfort and pleasure. Moving away from the traditional focus on efficiency, the firm integrated visual, auditory, and interactive experiences to create a serene, multi-sensory environment. This new design reflects the firm’s philosophy of romanticising the airport experience by incorporating nature and light to soothe the mind, body, and soul.

Lighting as a central element

Central to this transformation is the innovative use of lighting, designed in collaboration with French lighting consultant Ph A Concepteurs Lumière.

The nearly invisible lighting system blends seamlessly into the architecture, creating a calming atmosphere that contrasts with the typically sterile environment of traditional airports.

By concealing elements such as sprinklers, security cameras, and floor lights within intricately designed aluminium ceiling baffles, the lighting design minimises visual clutter and enhances the overall aesthetic.

Natural illumination

The lighting strategy was carefully crafted to highlight the biophilic elements of the terminal, which includes lush vegetation, water features, and mineral accents.

The choice of semi-polished flooring reflects light subtly, contributing to a serene vibe. Additionally, specialised lighting was designed to support the indoor vegetation, tailored to the specific needs of each plant species to ensure long-term sustainability.

The Wonderfall

At the heart of the Departure Hall, BOIFFILS Architectures introduced “The Wonderfall,” a 14-metre-high digital waterfall display flanked by vertical gardens.

This immersive installation, created in collaboration with multimedia studio Moment Factory, features soothing cascades that change direction, creating a captivating dance between water and light.

The display is set to music composed by Jean-Michel Blais, adding an auditory dimension to the visual experience.

Connecting indoors with nature

Another notable feature is the renovated south garden of the transit area, designed to offer a restful respite for passengers. An LED ceiling replicates real-time weather conditions, from overcast skies to sunsets, providing a connection to the outdoors.

Every 30 minutes, a show on the skylight screen simulates rain and vegetation growth, creating a dynamic and engaging environment. The floor’s acrylic-edged platform gives the impression of walking on water, surrounded by mirrored steel walls and flowing water, collectively known as ‘Dreamscape.’

Sustainability and human touch

BOIFFILS Architectures' design ethos is grounded in sustainability and human-centric experiences. The project has been awarded Platinum for The Green Mark Certification Scheme, Singapore’s green building rating system. This certification recognises the exceptional environmental performance and sustainability practices integrated into the design, construction, and operation of the terminal.

The firm also emphasised the use of artisanal materials to create human-scale experiences. Craftsmen from small firms were engaged to create bespoke elements, including champagne-coloured aluminium pillars, custom flooring from Spain, and blown glass chandeliers from Czechia. These artisanal touches not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also underscore the importance of human connection in the design process.

BOIFFILS Architectures' expansion of Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 is a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design and innovative lighting. By integrating natural elements and creating a calming, multi-sensory environment, the firm has redefined the airport experience. This project stands as a benchmark for ecological design, offering a harmonious blend of technology and nature that enhances the traveller experience from the moment they arrive.
