4SPACE, the award-winning design studio, has unveiled Akabeko, a striking new restaurant in Dubai, which blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary design.

Drawing on the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, Akabeko is a space where cultural heritage and modern dining seamlessly come together, creating an immersive experience for diners.
Lighting and atmosphere
Central to Akabeko's design is the interplay between light and shadow, using indirect lighting to add depth to the interior. Warm wood tones contrast against textured black walls, with lighting designed to enhance the serene, sophisticated atmosphere. These subtle yet impactful lighting choices allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the tranquil space, reflecting the wabi-sabi philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection.
The restaurant’s focal point, a striking Akabeko statue—a cultural symbol from Japanese folklore—anchors the design, while carefully placed bonsai trees add natural elegance. The lighting further highlights these elements, creating a space where each detail contributes to the narrative of Japanese heritage.
Craftsmanship and design
4SPACE’s attention to detail is evident in the materials used. Natural woods, organic forms, and minimalist textures create a balanced environment, while the lighting plays an essential role in elevating the space’s aesthetic. By illuminating the natural materials and textures, the lighting design brings warmth to the modern setting, inviting diners to engage with both the design and their dining experience.
Culinary experience
The restaurant’s innovative layout complements the culinary offerings. Integrated smokeless grills at each table enhance the interactive nature of the meal, while skilled chefs guide guests through the preparation of premium wagyu cuts. The lighting ensures a clear focus on the food while maintaining the overall ambiance of refined intimacy.
