Hav & Mar, nestled in Chelsea’s historic Starrett-Lehigh building, is redefining New York dining with its captivating lighting design. Conceived by designer Atelier Zébulon Perron in collaboration with chef Marcus Samuelsson, this restaurant blends African, Scandinavian, and American influences, with lighting playing a key role in shaping its inviting atmosphere.
The creative lighting design at Hav & Mar complements the restaurant’s multicultural theme and industrial origins. Sculptural fixtures, crafted in partnership with Lambert & Fils, create a layered glow that enriches each corner. Perron’s team employed lighting as both a functional and aesthetic element, blending warm, earthy tones with contrasting textures like walnut, polished concrete, and velvety walnut panelling. The lighting not only enhances these materials but transforms them into focal points within the space.
One striking feature is the canopy-like fixture above the main bar, reminiscent of a floating sea creature, which adds a playful yet elegant touch, grounding the room’s vastness and creating intimacy in an otherwise expansive area. This centrepiece, combined with delicate sculptural lights, guides guests’ eyes through the room’s verticality, amplifying its sense of height and warmth.
Each fixture is custom designed to act as a piece of art, elevating the lighting into a sculptural form. Perron emphasises, “Lighting is what infuses life into spaces.” At Hav & Mar, lighting does just that—capturing the vibrancy of the cultural fusion within and uniting culinary and design elements seamlessly.
Hav & Mar’s lighting isn’t just functional; it’s transformative, infusing the space with personality and a welcoming ambience. This design-forward approach makes Hav & Mar a standout dining experience, where thoughtful lighting invites guests to feel both inspired and at home.
