ModernMiningGold mining may be in the doldrums in South Africa but the industry is booming in West Africa, as this month’s News section of Modern Mining makes clear.

In Mali, B2Gold’s new Fekola mine has just poured its first gold while in neighbouring Burkina Faso the first pour at Endeavour Mining’s Houndé gold project is imminent. Endeavour has also just given the go-ahead for the Ity CIL project in Côte d’Ivoire. Yet another gold project making good progress is Toro’s Mako gold mine in Senegal, now well into construction and due to start producing early in 2018.

BK16 Elephant Rig 1 AlternativeGeology and exploration feature strongly in this issue, with a report on the start of a Large Diameter Drill (LDD) programme – using De Wet Drilling’s famous Elephant rig – at the BK16 kimberlite project in Botswana and a profile of Shango Solutions, one of the leading geological consultancies in South Africa. Interestingly, Shango is currently busy with a fascinating project involving the archiving and assessment of geological data on deposits around Africa collected by mining group Anglovaal over a period of around 90 years.

Loaders excavators and trucksOur October issue also includes a special feature on ‘Loaders, excavators and trucks’. This zeroes in on new developments at – among others – Scania and Bell Equipment. Scania has just introduced a heavy tipper with a 40-ton load capacity while Bell has announced that it is entering the tipper truck market through an alliance with Russia’s KAMAZ.
