Fraser Alexander showcases thought leadership at Investing in African Mining Indaba 2025

Lourens de Koning, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Fraser Alexander, took part in a session titled: "What is the role of technology in building and undermining sustainability in African mining?". During the panel, Lourens focused on tailings management. He explored how digital solutions, automation and real-time monitoring are enhancing operational safety, optimising resource recovery, and supporting compliance with industry standards such as the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management and the Global Tailings Management Institute initiative. Lourens also discussed how Fraser Alexander leverages innovation to transform mine waste into economic, social and environmental value, ensuring a more sustainable future for the industry.

Bongani Buthelezi, also COO at Fraser Alexander, contribued to the session: "Unlocking Africa’s critical minerals through digital transformation and cutting-edge innovations. He discussed how digital solutions are reshaping mining operations, improving efficiency, sustainability and value creation, while driving innovation in Africa’s critical minerals sector. Bongani highlighted successful applications of digital transformation, automation, and circular mining principles that have positioned African operations as globally competitive. He emphasised the importance of public-private sector collaboration in unlocking Africa’s full potential and ensuring long-term growth in the mining industry.

Sephela Makete Thema, General Manager of Tailings and Remining in South Africa at Fraser Alexander, will join the panel discussion: "Voices of the future: young professionals’ perspectives on the controversies surrounding African mining" as part of the Young Leaders Programme. This session, scheduled for Thursday, 6 February, from 09:40 to 10:40, will provide insights from emerging industry leaders on the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of mining in Africa. Sephela will discuss demystifying the controversies surrounding African mining and exploring the pivotal role of youth in achieving the African Mining Vision. He will also highlight how young professionals can contribute to zero-harm practices and a net positive environmental impact in mining and how the youth can play a critical role in overcoming the resource curse, future-proofing African mining, and driving active participation in the mining value chain.
