Modern Quarying July August 2016Since its listing on the Main Board of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in the Construction and Building Materials sector in 2006, leading open pit mining company Afrimat has grown by an average of more than 21% per year, only reporting a negative growth in 2009. The solid performance is attributed to the company’s diversification strategy and its cost reduction and efficiency improvements initiatives. This year, the company is celebrating a decade of success.

The song is ended but the melody lives on

In the July-August issue of Modern Quarrying, we honour Crown Publication’s founder and former publisher Jenny Warwick who passed away on 2 June after a long battle with illness. She will always be remembered with love and for touching the lives of the everyone who knew her.

· We report back on the fourth bi-annual GAIN meeting which was hosted by Aspasa in early April in Somerset West, Cape Town. GAIN (the Global Aggregates Information Network) is a coalition of the major international aggregates association across the world.

· In the final part of the paper entitled Transformation beyond the Equity Scorecard, it is pointed out that although the industry has its laggards, the results from the study suggest that mining companies have bought in and committed to transformation. However, the complexities associated with transforming the mining industry require a more effective collaboration between government and industry.

· It is estimated the Aspasa members represent about 75% of the aggregates crushed in South Africa. The Association serves the aggregates industry with 35 member companies operating in over 100 quarries. The list of services rendered to the industry is an ever-expanding one, paving the way for an industry with world-class standards.

· In our regular Supplier Spotlight feature, we look at Weir Minerals’ ongoing success with its Trio® comminution equipment in the quarrying environment. The company recently received a contract for a 300 t/hour plant in Zambia, followed by its latest comminution project in the Middle East – a 400 t/hour crushing and screening operation in Saudi Arabia.

· MQ’s Industry feature covers the Pilot Crushtec International and Metso’s crushing and screening powerhouse deal; CESA’s Bi-annual Economic and Capacity Survey, which indicates that times are getting tough with industry confidence the lowest in 16 years; SRK’s roadmap for water use licence compliance; the new CSSA national president; and several other relevant issues.

· Our Equipment Marketplace looks at Joest Kwatini; Weba Chutes; Caterpillar’s TM hammers; Doosan’s new-generation hydraulic excavators; and Babcock which has introduced the new Volvo A60H articulated hauler to the local market; among others.
